THE LYRIC CITY
Cityscapes and intimate spaces visually circumscribe our perception of urban life. Nature’s presence is hardly felt: “green“ spaces punctuate a few voids between manmade structures.
Excelling in the art of capturing contemplative moments in nature, Takeshi Shikama is also sensitive to man’s attempts at taming the flora within urban constructs. From New York to Paris, via Hong Kong and Tokyo, the artist re-composes urban space, integrating natural elements which call to him, encouraging us to reconsider the city as a landscape.
Shikama favors the tonal qualities of platinum/palladium prints to bring his portraits of nature to life. His choice of artisanal paper, composed of Gampi tree fibers, reinforces the link between his subjects and the final handmade object.

"Photographs that capture once-in-a-lifetime encounters... Such a style of photography has inspired me. I am not the one taking the pictures, rather nature is inducing me to take its portrait. And it is my earnest wish that my photographs will never end up being a requiem for the earth."
